GAIC is a non-statutory advisory non-departmental public body and has a UK-wide remit.
March 2008: Applications under consideration
There are currently no applications under consideration by GAIC. All applications submitted to GAIC by December 2000 have been returned to the Association of British Insurers. The ABI has written to the Department of Health on 8 June 2007 to say “The ABI has said that it has no plans to submit any applications for the use of futher predictive genetic tests, and certainly will not be making any applications in 2008.”
If any applications are received in the future then, as part of the review process, the relevant charities will be involved, and will be asked for comments.
To date GAIC has only approved one application, for Huntington's disease, for life insurance applications over £500,000.
