Dental education and professional self-regulation

  • Last modified date:

The Department of Health works closely with the following external organisations, which are responsible for dental education and professional self-regulation

The General Dental Council (GDC) is responsible for standards of dental education. The First Five Years: a Framework for Dental Undergraduate Education is available on the GDC’s website.

The General Dental Council also holds a list of dentists who are legally allowed to practise dentistry in the United Kingdom and – from 31 July 2006 – has operated a register of dental care professionals including hygienists, therapists, technicians, nurses, clinical dental technicians, and orthodontic therapists.

Information on specialist dental training is available from the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons England

Continuing professional development for dentists is provided by COPDEND, the Committe of Postraduate Deans and Directors
