On 25 October 2006, the Chief Medical Officer, Sir Liam Donaldson was presented with an Award for Excellence in the Advancement of Patient-Centred Care, by the Picker Institute.

Sir Liam received the 'Individual Award: In recognition of achievements in promoting and instilling safe, patient-centred care as a primary value of the NHS'.

In his role as Chief Medical Officer, Sir Liam is recognised as an international leader in health and health care, particularly in the fields of public health and health care safety and quality.

On the international stage, he is recognised as a pre-eminent world leader for patient safety and a powerful advocate for the central role of patients in improving patient safety.

Through his leadership of the World Alliance for Patient Safety, Sir Liam has nurtured a growing international network of patient champions working in partnership with health care providers to address unsafe care worldwide.

The Picker Institute is an independent, not for profit organization dedicated to the advancement of the principles of patient-centred care and the global patient-centred care movement. An element of the Picker Institute's mission is to identify and promote 'best practice' in patient-centred care.

One way in which the institute promotes best practice is through the recognition of professionals in the field whose work best exemplifies the goals and philosophy of the Picker Institute.

The values of the Picker Institute and the Patient-Centred Care Movement include:

  • fast access to reliable health advice
  • effective treatment delivered by staff you can trust
  • involvement in decisions and respect for patients' preferences
  • clear, comprehensible information and support for self-care
  • physical comfort and a clean, safe environment
  • empathy and emotional support
  • involvement of family and friends and support for careers
  • continuity of care and smooth transitions

Two other Awards were presented on the day, to Karen Davis, President of the Commonwealth Fund, and to Planetree, a non-profit membership organisation that works with hospitals and health centres to instil patient-centred care.
