The Chief Medical Officer provides advice to the Secretary of State for Health, the Prime Minister, health ministers and ministers of other government departments.
Professor Sir Liam Donaldson became the 15th Chief Medical Officer for England in 1998, following a distinguished and varied 30 year career. He received a knighthood in the 2002 New Year Honours List, in recognition of his achievements in health and health care.
