Two key sources of public health information

National Electronic Library for Health (NELH)

NeLH provides health care professionals and the public (through NHS Direct Online and the New Library Network) with knowledge and know-how to support health care related decisions. The NeLH is a programme of work within the portfolio of the NHS Information Authority.

The Public Health electronic Library (PHeL)

The Public Health electronic Library (PHeL), as part of NELH, aims to provide knowledge and know how to promote health, prevent disease and reduce health inequalities. Its objectives are to:

  • Provide access to quality data; evidence; information on initiatives and policies; networks, organisations and sectors; and learning from practice
  • Help co-ordinate communication on the range of dedicated public health activities
  • Highlight and promote opportunities for further involvement and engagement in the development of the public health agenda
  • Maximize the value of a wide range of resources and help to avoid duplication of effort
  • Develop partnerships and promote collective ownership of PHeL at all levels
  • Be quality driven with an ongoing programme of evaluation and user involvement
  • Improve skills and build the capacity for knowledge management.
