There are around 61 million mobile phones already in use in the UK today. A number of other wireless-based technologies are being introduced to the home and workplace and it is clear that such devices will increase in number and diversity. This page summarises the main technologies and provides a perspective on the risks associated with their use, by comparing them with mobile phones.

The introduction of new communications technologies that result in exposure to radiofrequency (RF) signals, superimposes novel signal characteristics on an existing complex RF background. Radiofrequency waves travel through the air connecting transmitters and receivers.  They are used for TV, radio, telecommunications, satellite communications as well as mobile phones and their supporting transmitters.

The general trend in newer equipment is to use higher (less penetrative in the body) frequencies and lower powers than those used in older technologies. Both of these characteristics are reassuring in respect of possible hazards.
