Legal position

Because of European Directives that are in force, when someone buys an item of radio equipment with the CE mark, the mark constitutes a legal affirmation that 'radiation... ...which would cause a danger is not produced'. Harmonised technical standards have been published so that manufacturers of radio devices can test their products against the requirements of international exposure guidelines, in order to substantiate this legal affirmation.

These guidelines have been produced by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), a body of independent scientific experts covering Medicine, Epidemiology, Biology, Physics and Engineering.

The collective expertise of ICNIRP is used to address the possible adverse effects on human health due to exposure to all non-ionising radiations including electromagnetic fields.

ICNIRP is officially recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) and International Labour Organization (ILO) as the international independent advisory body for non-ionizing radiation protection.

ICNIRP also collaborates with the European Commission (EC), principally the Directorate General for Health and Consumer Affairs (DG SANCO).

ICNIRP guidelines on exposure to electromagnetic fields were adopted by the Government in 2004.
