New technologies: Bluetooth
[Archive CMO Feature - Last updated: 31/08/05]

Short-range wireless communications can be achieved using Bluetooth technology. Devices incorporating Bluetooth include mobile phone headsets for hands free operation, and computer accessories such as printers, keyboards, mice, mobile phones and personal digital assistants.

The communications are normally over very short ranges, from a few metres to a few 10s of metres. Devices for these applications have very low output powers of only a few mW, around a hundred times lower than mobile phones. Exposures are therefore very low, even if the devices are used next to the body. The frequencies used are around 2.5 GHz.
