A Department of Health video that demonstrates safe administration of intrathecal chemotherapy has won several awards at events around the world, including the World Media Festival in Hamburg, Germany and the International Film and Video Awards in Los Angeles, USA.

Intrathecal Video 2003 was commissioned by the office of Sir Liam Donaldson and produced by UCL Images, a video production centre based at University College London. The video illustrates updated guidance from the Department of Health on safe administration of intrathecal administration.

The release of new guidance followed publication of the CMO's report 'An Organisation with a Memory', which highlighted problems with badly administered spinal injections that resulted in paralysis or death.

Since its release, the video has won awards at several international events:

  • International Film and Video Awards, Los Angeles, USA
    Gold Camera Award 2003
  • International Health and Medical Media Awards, Los Angeles, USA
    Freddie Award 2003
  • British Universities Film & Video Council & Learning on Screen video awards, London
Best Training Video 2004; Craft Award 2004 (Technical Excellence); highly commended in Premier Award 2004
  • World Media Festival, Hamburg Germany
Intermedia-globe Gold Award 2004; nominated for Intermedia-globe Grand Award 2004
