Retention and use of human tissue and organs
The use of tissue samples and organs in medical research and education has significant implications for everyone's health. The development of new drug therapies, diagnosis of existing conditions and the training of medical professionals relies heavily on the donation of tissue and organs. In the past, families have not always been asked for their consent for organs to be removed during a hospital post-mortem examination. Legislation in much of this area is unclear and is now being comprehensively reviewed. It is imperative that, while recognising the legitimate expectations of patients and families, this area of medicine is safeguarded for the long-term protection of our health but the approach taken must have the full support of the public, patients and families.
