Within the framework set by the Secretary of State, the Departmental Board supports the Permanent Secretary in the discharge of his responsibilities as the Principal Accounting Officer for the Department.
The Board is chaired by the Permanent Secretary and comprises the Department's three head policy advisors, the lead policy advisor on local government and social care, the head of finance and corporate functions, and three non-executive members who provide external input and challenge.
The Departmental Board is responsible for:
• advice to ministers on developing the strategy and objectives for the health and social care system
• setting DH standards
• establishing the framework of governance, assurance and management of risk.
The Departmental Board is also specifically responsible for approving:
• the Departmental Business Plan
• the Resource Accounts
• the Departmental Report
• major expenditure commitments as defined in scheme of delegations.
