Donal was appointed National Clinical Director for Kidney Care in January 2007 and has led the development of the Renal NSF since 2003 as Chair of the External Reference Group.
Donal was the inaugural President of the Multiprofessional British Renal Society (1999-2002) and has been a member of the RCP Committee on Renal Disease since 2000. He was Treasurer of the Renal Association (2004-2007) and President Elect of the Renal Association (2006-07).
Donal established the first managed clinical network for kidney care in the UK, was Clinical Director of Renal Services at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust (1994-2007) and led the development of multiprofessional care for kidney disease having trained in Manchester, Paris and Edinburgh.
Donal pioneered the identification of early kidney disease which affects 10% of the population. Current projects include integrated vascular control, leading the Renal NSF implementation and increasing transplantation.
