  • 2. Real stories, real lives: LGBT people and the NHS

    This resource has been produced as part of the DH Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Equality Strategy. It includes five modules: the stories included in each of module show the real life experiences of LGBT service users and staff, in the health and social care system. The resource aims to support healthcare organisations in developing strategies to promote equality and eliminate discrimination for LGBT people. It can be used as a practical tool in training staff and raising awareness.

  • 3. Reducing health inequalities for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people - briefings for health and social care staff

    Lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people experience a number of health inequalities which are often unrecognised in health and social care settings. These briefings provide easy-to-read guidance for health and social care commissioners, service planners and frontline staff. They aim to inform the delivery of appropriate services and to support health and social care professionals in their everyday work with LGBT people by providing fundamental awareness and evidence of LGBT needs in relation to health.

  • 4. PACE Initiative

    As part of the suicide prevention programme the National Mental Health Development Unit have commissioned PACE to undertake a review of the range of web-based information, support and advice services for LGBT people in delivering promotive and preventative services and measures leading to an improvement in the mental health and well-being of LGBT individuals. This review will also include scoping how mental health and other support services work with LGBT people, including data collection and monitoring. This letter provides more information about PACE and the review.

  • 6. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Advisory Group

    The Department of Health is currently working with LGBT stakeholders on the development of a sexual orientation and gender identity equality strategy. A Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Advisory Group is assisting with this work, which is moving forward through three workstreams: health inequalties, better employment and transgender health.

    The Equality Act (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2007 make it unlawful for health and social care staff to discriminate unfairly against lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people. This leaflet is intended to support staff to ensure that LGB people do not experience discrimination and prejudice in service delivery.

    This booklet has been produced to assist bereaved trans people or friends, or the family of a trans person who has died. It will also inform professionals such as coroners, pathologists, mortuary staff and undertakers to understand the particular needs of trans people in the circumstances of death.

  • 10. A guide for young trans people in the UK

    This leaflet, by a group of young trans people aged between 15 and 22 in conjunction with Gendered Intelligence, aims to offer information to young people who know they are trans or are confused about or questioning their gender in any way, so as to help clarify some of their questions and offer them language to express themselves.

  • 11. An introduction to working with transgender people: information for health and social care staff

    To deliver a patient-led NHS, services must be fair to everyone and recognise the needs of each individual. This leaflet is intended to support staff to ensure that transgender people do not experience discrimination and prejudice in service delivery. It is part of a more detailed package of resources to help staff to improve the quality and uptake of health and social care services for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

  • 12. Core training standards for sexual orientation: Making National Health Services inclusive for lesbian gay and bisexual people

    Before the end of the year, new regulations will come into force which will make it unlawful to discriminate on the grounds of sexual orientation in the provision of goods, facilities and services. Training has an important role to play in assisting health and social care organisations to ensure services are inclusive for lesbian, gay and bisexual people. The attached report provides best practice training standards for sexual orientation.
