The UK was one of the 189 countries that endorsed the UNGASS Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS in 2001. The monitoring process requires the submission of periodic reports to UNAIDS on national progress focussing on domestic HIV programmes. UNAIDS will analyse reports received and prepare a Global Report for the Secretary General to present at the next UNGASS on AIDS planned for early June
In line with the Declaration of Commitment, the Department of Health very much welcomes and supports the UNAIDS recommendation that governments should seek input to their reports from civil society, including people living with HIV/AIDS, and voluntary and community-based organisations
The Department of Health is responsible for compiling the UK report and I attach the interim report which we have sent to UNAIDS. We will finalise this report on completion of consultation. We have already involved the four national HIV voluntary organisations who have completed part B of the National Policy Composite Index which forms part of the national report. I am grateful for their work in completing this within a tight deadline.
We welcome your comments on the UK response and additions you feel we should include. Because of a delay in receiving the report request from UNAIDS, the attached does include some omissions which we will complete in the final report.
