Order establishing PMETB - safe passage through Parliament
Following approval by the Scottish Parliament on 20th March, and the House of Commons on 25th March, the Order establishing the PMETB (the General and Specialist Medical Practice (Education Training and Qualifications) Order 2003) was approved by the House of Lords on 4th April. We expect the Order to be made at the Privy Council meeting on 8th May 2003.
Once the Order is made, advertisements will be placed for the Chair and members. The Board will have substantial NHS and patient representation in addition to its medical members. Applications would therefore be welcomed from a wide range of individuals with an intent in standards for postgraduate medical education and training. This appointment process will run through the Summer and we expect the Board to have its inaugural meeting in October 2003.
When the Board is in place the transition between the old and new systems will commence. We envisage that this process will continue throughout 2004.
This consultation sets out draft legislation to establish the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) as a statutory body which will act as the professional UK competent authority to supervise postgraduate medical education and training.Contact details for obtaining hard-copy DH publications.
