The intergovernmental consultation document, Improving Health, Supporting Justice, focussed upon the health and social care services for those individuals who have offended or are at risk of offending. This report will form part of the evidence set for the developing national Offender Health and Social Care Strategy that is likely to be published in spring 2009.

The Department of Health has published a response to a consultation it held on the draft regulations for Local Involvement Networks (LINks). The draft regulations set out how LINks’ powers would work in practice and the consultation asked a number of specific questions. The publication summarises the consultation results and the Governments response to the views expressed.

The consultation document proposed the abolition of the Standing Dental Advisory Committee (SDAC) in view of the increasing use of bodies like the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), and subject specific committees, for obtaining clinical advice in dentistry.

This document reports on findings from the post-registration nursing careers consultation, which took place from November 2007 to February 2008. The consultation proposed aligning nurses' careers within five broad pathways. The report discusses the emerging themes from the findings, and outlines the next steps for the work.

The consultation document described a more strategic approach to DH’s investment in the third sector to be more consistent with its role in the health and social care system. Establishing a clear strategic framework would achieve four objectives; allow more coherent investment; support evaluation of outcomes and benefits; increase value for money; and reinforce the sector's integral role.

The implementation of the Independent Safeguarding Authority scheme under the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006 will introduce the most stringent vetting and barring service yet. The scheme will protect both children and vulnerable adults by preventing those who are known to pose a risk of harm from accessing these groups through their work.

This consultation response sets out the final Code of Practice for the promotion of NHS-funded services, largely based on the text of the draft Code that was published for consultation. Changes have been made in response to consultation, as well as to the proposed route for enforcing the Code. The final Code also clarifies those areas that are already regulated by the ASA and those new rules that are NHS-specific.

This guidance sets out how to identify an appropriate consultee for the purposes of section 32 of the Mental Capacity Act. The Act requires the researcher to take reasonable steps to identify a person who, as a result of an existing relationship with the person who lacks capacity, can advise the researcher about that person’s participation in the project. Where no such person can be identified, the Act requires another person who can provide this advice to be appointed in accordance with guidance.
