Grants, resources or donations to dental bodies

Information about grants, resources or donations made by the government to the British Fluoridation Society (BFS) and the British Dental Association (BDA).

Question

I would be grateful if you could arrange for me to be supplied with the following information:

  • A list of all grants, resources or donations given by Her Majesty's Government (HMG) to the BFS in each year since its formation which seem to recall was in 1968. Please also include grants made via the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland offices. What was the stated purpose for which these grants were made? What scrutiny of expenditure of these grants by the BFS is/was made?
  • Please list any grants, resources or donations given by HMG in each year since 1979 to the BDA together with the stated purpose for which any such grants were made and the arrangements for scrutiny of relevant expenditure.

Response

In accordance with relevant regulatory requirements, the BFS has maintained records of its annual accounts since 1998.  I attach the information the BFS has been able to supply in the table below.  The grants were made to support the BFS in promoting the benefits of the fluoridation of water in reducing tooth decay.  The Department of Health conducts an annual review as part of which the use the BFS makes of government funds is examined.

The only record of any payment falling within the terms of your enquiry by the Department of Health to the BDA which we have been able to identify was a grant of £4,500 made in 2004 to pay for a reprint of a Stop Smoking leaflet the BDA had produced for issue to patients in dental surgeries.  I am not aware that the other UK health departments have made any similar grants to the BDA.  Enquiries about this should be addressed to the Departments in question.
