Information about numbers and costs for gastric banding procedures.

Question

Information relating to the average cost of surgery that includes gastric banding procedures as well as an approximate figure for the number for these procedures that are conducted each year.

Response

The reference costs information details the national average cost of a variety of procedures and treatment undertaken by the NHS in England. It also provides information on the cost to the NHS of buying in services from non-NHS providers in England.

Gastric banding procedures have been identified under the following two headings:

* HRG F13 Stomach or Duodenum - major procedures more than 69 years old or with complications or comorbidities; and

* HRG F14 Stomach or Duodenum - major procedures less than 70 years old or without complications or comorbidities

Table 1 shows the national average cost of such procedures undertaken by NHS Trusts in England during the financial year 2003/2004. (Source: National Schedule of Reference Costs Appendix SRC1.)

It provides details for three types of patient admission; elective inpatient admissions (planned) non-elective inpatient admissions (unplanned) and day cases (where the patient is admitted to and discharged from a provider in a single day).Table 1

Table 2 shows the national average cost of such procedures sub-contracted to, or directly commissioned from, non-NHS providers in England during the financial year 2003/2004 (Source: National Schedule of Reference Costs Appendix SRC5).

It provides details for three types of patient admission; elective inpatient admissions (planned), non-elective inpatient admissions (unplanned) and day cases (where the patient is admitted to and discharged from a provider in a single day).

Unfortunately, due to the way in which the data is reported, we cannot identify the costs of gastric bandings procedures reported within the composite costs that we collect, or the activity. Nor can we identify the national average costs or activity of such bandings procedures alone, nor confirm whether the above average costs reflect the actual national average costs of such procedures.
