Coronary heart disease (CHD) is preventable yet kills more than 110,000 people in England every year. More than 1.4 million people suffer from angina and 275,000 people have a heart attack annually. Such statistics mean CHD is the biggest killer in the country. The Government is committed to reducing the death rate from CHD, stroke and related diseases in people under 75 by at least 40 percent - to 83.8 deaths per 100,000 population - by 2010.
In this section, you will find more information about how this is being achieved, as well details of CHD-related schemes and initatives.
The NHS Heart Improvement Programme supports the delivery of the National Service Framework (NSF) for Coronary Heart Disease, through the development of cardiac networks.
NHS Direct contains information and advice on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of CHD and other cardiac conditions.
