Developing team competencies for patient-centred critical care services

The Department of Health in conjunction with the Modernisation Agency has commenced a project to develop team competencies/standards and indicators for adult person-centred critical care services within England. The project commenced in March 2004 and is due to be completed with the release of a final report submission by December 2004.

Project objectives

The project has a number of objectives:

  • Developing the competency framework using various techniques such as:
    - values clarification exercises
    - thematic analysis;
  • Developing indications of team effectiveness including systematic review of literature in this area;
  • Integrating clinical and team competencies currently existing involving
    - obtaining existing competencies
    - the thematic analysis of results; and
    - the mapping of results from locally developed competency frameworks against the emerging team framework
  • Continuous evaluation, identifying stakeholder issues and future directions involving  - the monitoring of concerns, claims and issues
    - eporting of results.

Timeframe

  • May-June: Four regional workshops
  • November-December: Consultation on draft report
  • End of December: Final report submission

  • Complete the values clarification exercise by 31 August and return to jo.odetola@rcn.org.uk.   This form can be completed by individuals and teams.

Proposed outcomes of the project

  • Common shared vision across stakeholder groups;
  • Set of competencies/standards for critical care teams;
  • Set of indicators of team effectiveness for generic use;
  • Recommendation for roll-out, testing and use with a dynamic framework;
  • Framework for sharing with other countries.

  • A framework for self assessment of local critical care services;
  • A framework for monitoring/benchmarking progress;
  • A framework to inform a plan for development work;
  • A tool to enable critical care services to describe how they are developing new ways of working.
