About other reciprocal healthcare agreements

  • Last modified date:
    27 July 2007

The UK has reciprocal healthcare agreements with some other countries and territories. This means that you can get urgent medical treatment either at reduced cost or, in some cases, free.

The countries or territories and services available are listed in the 'Country-by-country guide to entitlements outside the EEA' section. The range of medical services may be more restricted than under the NHS. Any charges you pay are non-refundable, so you should take out health insurance before you go. If you are planning to live or work in one of the reciprocal agreement countries, the arrangements in this section may not apply. Contact HM Revenue and Customs Centre for Non-Residents for details.

The Armed Forces

If you are a member of the Armed Forces serving in any of the reciprocal agreement countries, you and your dependants should generally use HM Forces medical facilities. Your standing orders will tell you what's available.
