Between 2001/02 and 2003/04 the Department of Health invested £6 million in a programme to train and support district and community nurses in the principles and practice of palliative care. The programme met a commitment in the NHS Cancer Plan (2000) and was an important part of the supportive and palliative care strategy.
The Department of Health's Policy Research Programme and Cancer Policy Team commissioned an independent evaluation of the programme by King's College, London. The completed evaluation report has now been published.
