Transitional Living Unit (TLU), Haberdasher's House, Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability, London

  • Last modified date:
    14 January 2008

The Unit was established in 1993 to help adults with acquired brain injury return to the community and live as independently as possible. Using a goal-orientated approach, it works with residents who have differing physical, cognitive, behavioural and functional abilities, to achieve the aims that they identify.

The Unit has produced a report highlighting best practice in approaches to joint working between social services and health authorities in the area of supported independent living units, which has involved representatives from Health Authorities, Social Services Departments, Care Agencies and Housing Departments.

The TLU is willing to share its approaches including:

  • person-centred goal setting within a psychological model;
  • protocols for setting up aims and goals with the individual;
  • team working;
  • staff training

There is a bedsit environment in which residents can experience more independent living than on the Unit (e.g. greater opportunity for budgeting, cooking all meals, organising time etc), offering a 'halfway' setting between the TLU and home.
