Buckinghamshire Brain Injury Service Network

The Brain Injury Service Network is a county-wide inter-agency network. It serves four primary care trusts, two local councils and three Headway groups in Buckinghamshire and Milton (estimated population 750,000). The network includes both local and specialist county-wide brain injury services.

The local services consist of brain injury clinical nurse specialist/therapists, local inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services, specialist social workers/care managers and local groups of Headway, the brain injury association.

The specialist county-wide services include the Community Head Injury Service rehabilitation team and 'Working Out' (vocational rehabilitation) team, inpatient neuro-rehabilitation team, medical consultant in brain injury rehabilitation, neuro-psychiatry (on a consultancy basis).

These services are co-ordinated and enhanced through various key stakeholders groups and panels. Services are funded through joint finance over five years through health and social services.

The network is willing to share the following tools:

  • Strategy Group Terms of Reference, Service Network Leaflet & Review Report;
  • inter-agency, county-wide Rehabilitation Referral Protocol and Operational Policy and
  • inter-agency, county-wide, brain injury professional training workshop programme (talks, illustrative videotape examples and practical small group work).
