Clinical Managed Network for Parkinson's Disease, Cornwall

  • Last modified date:
    8 February 2007
This approach could be adapted for other long-term conditions.

This network was developed as an initiative led by patients to build local capacity for the delivery of specialist Parkinson's disease services to meet identified patient need through developing allied health professionals (AHPs) with a specialist interest in Parkinson's disease.

At first the network organised four educational days per year for AHPs to enhance their knowledge of Parkinson's disease and its management. The aims were as follows:

  • to triage Parkinson's disease issues through AHPs instead of referring; people to secondary care (and thereby build capacity)
  • to utilise the skills of some AHPs who had previously undertaken the ENB A43 course;
  • to further involve existing AHPs with a specialist interest;
  • to enhance care for people with Parkinson's disease and
  • to act as a possible model of care for implementation of the NSF for Long-term Conditions.
