Physical Disability and Sensory Services Care Group, Hampshire

  • Last modified date:
    8 February 2007
This approach could be adapted for other long-term conditions.

The service offers both assessment and provider services which focus on the social care needs of people with disabilities and people sensory impairments. For people of working age, the focus is on care management, day services, and domiciliary and residential services. However, people of all ages have access to occupational therapy, Direct Payments, equipment, technicians, sensory services and social services.

The Social Services Learning and Development Team has worked with the care group to commission a series of half or whole day workshops to give staff knowledge and understanding of neurological conditions and to consider ways of developing necessary skills for their care practice. Local specialists deliver the training and individuals and carers present their personal perspectives. The following workshops have been run to date:

  • Introduction to Multiple Sclerosis;
  • Caring for People Affected by Stroke;
  • Introduction to Motor Neurone Disease;
  • Huntington's Disease;
  • Understanding Acquired Brain Injury;
  • Understanding Diabetes;
  • Understanding Spinal Cord Injury and
  • Psychological Effects of Physical Disability.

Follow-on courses are being arranged to provide more in depth knowledge in motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, orthopaedic conditions and working with drug and alcohol abuse. Evaluation of the training showed that team members were more confident when working with people with long term conditions and that it represented value for money.
