Northumbria Healthcare Parkinson's Disease Service, Tyne & Wear

  • Last modified date:

The Northumbria Parkinson's Disease (PD) Service was established in 1995 and serves a population of 500,000.There is an open referral policy which includes self-referral.

All general, local and community hospitals hold clinics so that people with Parkinson's disease do not have far to travel to a clinic. Parkinson's disease nurses also run their own clinics in the same locations and offer home visits and telephone support according to the needs of the individual.

People using the services are involved in awaydays and focus groups to help inform service development. As a result of this consultation, the service decided to hold clinics in the afternoon because people with Parkinson's disease and carers found this more convenient.

The service offers an education and support programme lasting eight weeks. This helps people to learn about their condition and its symptoms. People with Parkinson's disease attend the programme with their carer. Sessions are facilitated and people are able to choose which topics they would like to be covered.

The service is developing a 'Professional Care Guide' for professionals to promote standard practice across the catchment area.
