Motor Neurone Disease Care Centre Programme

  • Last modified date:
    8 February 2007

The Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association funds a network of twelve MND Care Centres based in regional neuroscience centres. They deliver high quality coordinated assessment and management of care to all people with confirmed or suspected MND in line with the Association's Standards of Care. Each Centre is led by a neurologist with specialist expertise in MND. All employ a Care Centre Coordinator who acts as a key worker and dedicated single point of contact for people with MND and their carers, and some have additional multi-disciplinary therapy and social care input. As tertiary centres they share their expertise with health and social care professionals across the region through individual advice, educational opportunities and local MND special interest groups. The programme was evaluated positively by the Charity Evaluation Services.

The individual centres have developed a number of resources and different ways of working which they are willing to share including:

  • fast-track diagnostic clinics,
  • taped consultations,
  • nurse-led drop-in and post-diagnosis clinics,
  • pre-clinic telephone assessments,
  • development of advance directives,
  • development of preferred place of care for specific use in MND,
  • MND care pathways,
  • use of critical event analysis to review and update RIG pathway,
  • carers' information days,
  • links with local ambulance services in the event of a critical incident at home,
  • trained volunteers in clinics for information giving and practical help and support,
  • training for staff on general wards,
  • raining for GPs
