The King's Motor Nerve Clinic at King's College Hospital, London

  • Last modified date:
    1 March 2005
King's College Hospital has a well established Motor Neurone Disease Care & Research Centre, which holds outpatient clinics, clinical trials and research. The Centre aims to provide co-ordinated and holistic care according to the Motor Neurone Disease Association's Standards of Care, and to carry out research in partnership with people affected by motor neurone disease. The centre is actively involved in developing new treatments and in broadening the remit of palliative care.

There is a weekly motor neurone disease clinic which acts as a 'one-stop shop'. In addition to a consultation with the neurologist, people have the opportunity to see a therapist and a nurse/co-ordinator. Carers are specifically offered separate time with the neurologist and /or centre co-ordinator.

The multidisciplinary team includes a team of four neurologists, nurses and therapists, and has links with other specialist teams based at the hospital including palliative care, respiratory medicine, radiology, gastroenterology and counselling services.

The centre has produced protocols for delivering diagnosis and two management guidelines for nutritional management, and respiratory assessment and care.
