Motor Neurone Disease Care Centre, Manchester

  • Last modified date:

A fortnightly diagnostic/new referral clinic is held in the Neurophysiology Department which has reduced the time from referral to diagnosis for people with suspected motor neurone disease (MND). Both the neurologist and the Motor Neurone Disease Care Centre Co-ordinator are present, with equipment available for diagnostic investigations as indicated. There is a protocol for giving diagnosis which involves both professionals, the individual and their family.

The centre also runs a fortnightly specialist multidisciplinary outpatient clinic. People diagnosed with, or with a suspected diagnosis of MND are assessed by professionals and are then re-assessed as their needs change. Each professional carries out in-depth consultations with the individual, their carer and their friends or family. A multidisciplinary team produces a summary of the consultation, which is then given to the individual as a record of their visit to the clinic. This summary is also available for health and social care professionals who visit the individual at home.

The team has developed pathways of care for alternative feeding and secretion management.
