'Working Out' Programme, Community Head Injury Service (CHIS), Vale of Aylesbury Primary Care Trust

  • Last modified date:

'Working Out' is a specialist brain injury vocational assessment and rehabilitation programme which aims to:
  • assess vocational impact and needs of persons with acquired brain injury;
  • provide specialist rehabilitation programmes to clarify and enhance vocational potential;
  • set up and evaluate voluntary work trials to prepare people to return to a productive occupation and
  • find, set up and support suitable long-term placements.

The programme has four integrated phases:

  • vocational assessment;
  • work preparation programme;
  • voluntary work trials and
  • supported work placements.

The work preparation programme includes a work preparation group, community vocational rehabilitation activities, and placement support group, as well as individual project work/training, vocational counselling and psychological therapy.

The service has good outcomes, with 67% of clients in paid employment or training and a further 18% permitted to work, do voluntary work or attend adult education.

The service has produced the following tools which they are willing to share:

  • Working Out information pack, with details of the overall programme and specific components (e.g. rehabilitation activities, vocational counselling & placement support group);
  • skills training workshops in vocational assessment and rehabilitation after acquired brain injury, with illustrative videotape examples. (The service has a two day workshop aimed at NHS staff and a four day workshop for Jobcentre Plus Work Psychologists) and
  • A Joint Framework and Guidelines for Vocational Assessment and Rehabilitation after acquired brain injury (produced after experience of joint working between Working Out programme and Job Centre Plus).

Working Out was recognised as an example of good practice by the NHS, Social Services Departments and Job Centre Plus, winning the Nye Bevan NHS Modernisation Award 2000 in the South-East Region.
