G10 Medicines

  • Last modified date:
    8 February 2007

The G10 High Level Group on Innovation and Access, or G10 Medicines, was established in March 2001 to consider ways to strengthen the competitiveness of the European pharmaceutical industry. The group included top EU decision-makers, European commissioners, ministers, industry CEOs and patient representatives.

The Group presented its Report to the European Commission on 7 May 2002. It set out a framework of 14 wide-ranging recommendations. The present Communication is the Commission's response to the above Report. The Communication divided the Recommendations into the following five broad themes:

  1. Benefits to patients
  2. Developing a competitive European-based industry
  3. Strengthening the EU Science base
  4. Medicines in an enlarged European Union
  5. Member States learning from each other.

Most of the recommendations have now been implemented.

Post G10/Pharmaceutical Strategy

On 1 June 2005, Commissioner Verheugen announced a new Pharmaceutical Strategy.  It will be built on two core building blocks: the Lisbon Agenda and the solid progress achieved with new pharmaceutical legislation and the G10 process. The Cion has developed a strategy, which has three central features: innovation, pricing and patients.
