European Union websites

The European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products (EMEA)  is in charge of coordinating scientific resources existing in Member States with a view to evaluating and supervising medicinal products for human and veterinary use. The Agency comprises three committees responsible for preparing the Agency's opinions on questions relating to medicinal products for human use (CPMP), for veterinary use (CVMP) and for the designation of "orphan drugs" for rare diseases (COMP - summarised COMP Opinions on orphan medicinal products can also be found on this site).  Details of all orphan designations granted to date are entered on the Community Register of Orphan Medicinal Products

Trade associations

The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI)
ABPI is the trade association for about a hundred companies in the UK producing prescription medicines. Its member companies research, develop, manufacture and supply more than 90 per cent of the medicines prescribed through the National Health Service (NHS).

The Association of the British Healthcare Industries (ABHI)
ABHI is the lead trade association for the medical systems industry, representing manufacturers / suppliers of medical devices, equipment & services. Its member companies produce around 80% of the British medical systems industry's output - include manufacturers and distributors of medical equipment and consumables, service providers and health-care planners.

British Association of Pharmaceutical Wholesalers (BAPW)
The BAPW represents full line pharmaceutical distributors who between them provide 90% of the nations medicines, covering all of the UK's population.

The British Generic Manufacturers Association (BGMA)
Represents the interests of UK based manufacturers and suppliers of generic medicines and promotes the development of the generic medicines industry.

BIVDA - The British In Vitro Diagnostics Association
BIVDA was established in 1992 as the national trade association for the In Vitro Diagnostics (IVD) industry based in offices in central London. The BIVDA membership now represents the interest of more than 90% of the industry including both manufacturers and distributors. The UK IVD market was £380 million in 2001.

The Proprietary Association of Great Britain (PAGB) is the trade association that represents the manufacturers of over-the-counter medicines and food supplements.
