Terms of reference

1. To oversee the gathering of evidence to support the NSF in long term conditions - evidence may take several forms including:

  • Systematic reviews
  • Novel research to address specific identified areas
  • Gathering the views of users, carers and the professionals who support them

2. To review the evidence arising from those sources  and pass it back to the ERG for consideration

3. To assist the working parties  and ERG - where possible with the task of mapping evidence onto the proposed standards. (However, please note that the group is not resourced to provide the type of extensive literature assimilation which is undertaken by NICE and many other national groups in the preparation of guidelines and standards)

4. To identify current gaps in research and explore means by which these could be filled. These may include:

  • Identifying critical areas for future targeted research funding from the R&D programme and other research funding bodies
  • Working in partnership with other stakeholders such as user organisations etc to gather the required data
  • Identifying other possible resources such as research skills in individual departments, marketing research programmes in pharmaceutical companies etc which could help to provide additional data

5. To define the agenda for on-going research during implemntation of the NSF for which funds have been ear-marked by the DH R&D department
