The NHS Plan contained proposals to strengthen primary care mental health by appointing 1000 new graduate primary care mental health workers and 500 more community mental health staff ('Gateway workers') by 2004.

In 2002/3, £2.5m has been made available for the establishment of training programmes for the new graduate workers. This is being managed by Trent Workforce Development Confederation. Applications are now being sought from interested HE providers. Application forms are available from:
