Action learning sets

  • Last modified date:
    7 April 2008

Action learning sets bring together key individuals in service delivery in small dynamic groups to learn with others by probing, understanding and action.

Sets have been established in the areas of:

  • non-emergency patient transport for dialysis patients in urban and rural areas
  • information and prevention of chronic kidney disease in primary care
  • the extension of palliative care to renal services.

What’s new

Following the success of the first renal action learning sets, the Department of Health commissioned a second phase of this programme comprising six sets in October 2006.

These sets focussed on three areas of service improvement using action learning:

  • the pre-dialysis year
  • transition from paediatric to adult services
  • acute renal failure.

The final report from the Renal Action Learning Sets 2006-2007 (published 7 April 2008) details the methods used by the sets and their highlights their learning. Accompanying the report is a detailed pack of supporting documents.
