This resource has been developed to support stroke related workforce planning and is provided for use alongside the National Stroke Strategy to allow professionals and organisations to drive change and improve care for patients as well as supplying staff with opportunities for personal and professional development.
It comprises four sections: case studies; professional organisations’ consensus statements; a grid of current and aspirational staffing levels on stroke units; and a table of professionals involved in stroke care.
The case studies are divided into four key workforce areas: prevention, acute care, rehabilitation, and community services. Cases studies are provided in each of these areas describing examples of developing stroke specialist skills, and how roles have developed and changed in areas of excellence in stroke treatment. Some of the case studies appear in more than one area, reflecting the diversity of each role: individuals in the workforce are likely to have contact with more than one area of the stroke care pathway.
Different professions from along the stroke care pathway have produced position statements regarding their roles and responsibilities and how they see workforce development progressing to improve stroke care. Such statements may focus development and allow each profession a greater understanding of others with whom they work.
Data regarding the current and aspirational levels of staffing on stroke units has been collected from a variety of sources and is displayed in a grid to allow comparison. It is intended to provide a guide for development and improvement of new and existing stroke units.
This table gives an overview of the variety of professions involved in the treatment and care of individuals affected by stroke. It is intended to provide a snapshot view of the current position of these professions at the time of publication of the National Stroke Strategy.
The Workforce Review Team is looking at current staffing levels and working on estimates of future staffing requirements for care provided by a multidisciplinary team.
