Documents on the transfer of responsibilities and the Prison Health Development Network.

Transfer

In September 2002, it was announced that funding responsibility for prisoner's healthcare would transfer from the Prison Service to the Department of Health from April 2003, and to devolve this responsibility fully to NHS Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) completely by April 2006.  The following links contain Ministerial announcements and press releases concerning the transfer:

Development Network

A first wave of PCTs and prison partnerships applied to take on early commissioning responsibility in April 2004 and formed a Development Network.  The Network has a 'learning and sharing' focus in respect of these organisations as well as for those in subsequent years.  The Health Services Management Centre of the University of Birmingham has been charged with the running of the Network and works closely with the Prison Health team.  Their website contains examples of good practice, policy documents and an interactive discussion forum.
