In August 2004, the Department of Health published a review of central funding of hospital chaplaincy, which formed the basis for extensive consultation with all major faith groups. The Department has now concluded its consultation on, and consideration of, the review of central funding of NHS chaplaincy.
The outcome will redistribute the existing budget to more equitably provide for the religious and spiritual needs of patients whilst in hospital. This means continued, but reduced, funding for Jewish and Free Church chaplaincy. The funds saved will be used to create a new equivalent post for Muslim chaplaincy and allow six other faiths - Baha'i, Buddhist, Hindu, Jain, Sikh and Zoroastrian faiths - access to funds to support specific projects.
South Yorkshire Strategic Health Authority will administer the central funds on behalf of the Department.
