DH has commissioned a tool to help with workforce planning in pathology services.  Its main aim is to log what the scientific workforce does currently in individual pathology services, and help managers to model changes to its profile.  The tool and the supporting documents are free of charge.

To order the tool, visit www.orderline.dh.gov.uk; or write to: DH Publications Orderline, PO Box 777, London SE1 6XH; or email: dh@prolog.uk.com; or telephone: 0300 123 1002; or fax: 01623 724 524, and quote: 290828 /Pathology Workforce Planning Tool.

Pathology: towards a competence based workforce

Workforce profiling pilots were undertaken at three sites - University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, University Hospitals of North Staffordshire NHS Trust and Hereford Hospitals NHS Trust - as part of a wider DH programme of workforce modernisation led by the Chief Scientific Officer, Professor Sue Hill. The report, Pathology: towards a competence based workforce, is now available.

The report analyses the skills needed to deliver modernised, efficient pathology services and provides examples of the pathology workforce that may be needed in the future, based on service functions and competences.  The reprofiled workforce in the three NHS sites is supported by a benefits realisation plan and offers an illustration of what might be achieved whilst at the same time ensuring better care for patients, better opportunities for staff and better value for money.
