The Department of Health's Race Equality Scheme

All public authorities listed under the Race Relations (Amendment) Act have a General Duty to promote race equality. This means being proactive about challenging racial discrimination and promoting good race relations between different racial groups.

In order to meet the General Duty the Home Secretary has issued an order under the Act, which sets out Specific Duties for listed public bodies on the policy and service delivery/employment functions. Under the Act listed public authorities have a duty to publish a Race Equality Scheme (RES).

The Department of Health's RES covers the Department itself and its executive agencies. NHS organisations, such as Strategic Health Authorities and Nhs trusts, local authorities and regulatory bodies set out their plans to promote race equality in their own RES.
