The Department of Health is committed to eliminating discrimination and promoting equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LBGT) people in health and social care, both as service users and as employees.
The Department of Health commissioned a project to identify the key barriers to reporting of homophobia against health and social care employees. The report, Being the gay one: Experiences of lesbian, gay and bisexual people working in the health and social care sector, includes a series of recommendations to the Department for overcoming these barriers.
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Health Summit is an annual event.
Highlighting key health issues for these communities, the summit covers topics on LBGT health like disability, mental health, identity, ageing and drugs, drawing delegates from across the UK.
The Department of Health is currently working with LGBT stakeholders on the development of a sexual orientation and gender identity equality strategy. The Department's LGBT staff group PRISM held a lunchtime event for DH, NHS, social care and voluntary sector staff on Thursday 23rd February 2006 in London to mark Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) History Month.
