This Government is undertaking the largest hospital building programme in the history of the NHS. Capital expenditure has increased from around £1.1 billion in 1997-1998 to around £5.5 billion in 2007-2008. The result of all this investment is improving the patient environment and experience of healthcare, modernising services, improving access for patients and offering better choice.
This document (published 4 June 2008) is designed to afford greater transparency and consistency across the NHS in relation to: identifying underperformance; interventions to address turnaround; and managing failure.
