Education, training and development

The opportunity for all staff to learn and develop is a crucial factor in achieving new ways of patient-centred working to take forward the modernisation and delivery of education and continuing professional development beyond registration, ensuring this supports the needs of patients and carers, health-care teams and individuals and related service and organisational priorities.

Pre-registration education, training and development

The Pre-Registration Education, Training and Development team are responsible for the development of policies, which support the needs of patients, carers, healthcare teams, individuals and related services and organisation priorities.

Post-registration

Continued education and training of registered professionals benefits both patients and the clinical team. This page sets out the principles by which further learning should be undertaken.

Partnership and stakeholder engagement

We cannot deliver on our commitments and targets on developing the NHS workforce in isolation, and we must develop effective partnerships across the health and education sectors. This will be done at both a national/strategic level and through local partnership working.

Appraisals

With the introduction of revalidation, all doctors need to be able to show appraisal results. The appraisal system will eventually be extended to cover all NHS staff.

Teaching PCTs

Newly-reconfigured PCTs did not automatically inherit the right to the "teaching" title and logo of any of their constituent organisations. This letter provides more information about how to re-apply for this.

Quality assurance of NHS funded education and training

The Sector Skills Council (SSC) for the UK health sector, Skills for Health has been charged with developing a new Quality Assurance Framework for education contracts.

Review of NHS student support

The NHS bursary scheme, which provides financial support to students undertaking NHS commissioned healthcare courses, is being reviewed. A Steering Group is developing and analysing a series of options for the future of NHS student support and assessing how well they meet the aims of the review. Once they have completed the first stage of their analysis, we will consult widely to seek the views of others with an interest, including people who are currently considering entering healthcare professional training.
