Modernising professional regulation
The past few years have seen considerable modernisation of the organisations responsible for the regulation of healthcare professionals and the social care workforce, with the ongoing aim of protecting the health and well-being of patients
The White Paper Trust, assurance and safety: the regulation of health professionals
Marking the first comprehensive overhaul in more than three decades, the Government published on 21 February 2007 a White Paper setting out landmark proposals for the reform of the regulation of health professionals in the United Kingdom.
Implementation of the White Paper: the Professional Regulation and Patient Safety Programme
Following publication of the White Paper the Department of Health has commissioned seven national working groups to take forward a broad programme of reform to the current system of professional regulation in the healthcare sector.

National Clinical Assessment Service (NCAS)
NCAS promotes patient safety by providing confidential advice and support to the NHS in situations where the performance of doctors and dentists is giving cause for concern. Managers or practitioners themselves can contact NCAS for advice.
NCAS toolkit
NCAS has launched a web-based toolkit to help NHS managers with the challenging job of managing performance concerns locally.
