The Flexible Careers and Returner Schemes for hospital doctors and GPs have enabled flexible working arrangements, including support to those wanting to return to work, to be embedded in the NHS. Strategic health authorities are now responsible for defining the future arrangements for the schemes in their locality.

Further to the letter of 7 October 2005, this letter from Debbie Mellor (Head of Workforce Capacity) confirms in-year allocations of £12m for the Flexible Careers and Returners Schemes. This is the full central allocation to cover 2005/06 costs relating to the schemes.
The Flexible Careers Scheme (FCS) was developed in conjunction with the BMA as part of the Improving Working Lives initiative. It provides doctors with an opportunity to work flexibly within mainstream general practice while being supported in maintaining their careers.
