Patient environment networks

  • Last modified date:

Patient environment networks operate in each strategic health authority (SHA) area to support the modernisation of basic care services at a local level.

What is a patient environment network?

Patient environment networks are groups of NHS staff who regularly meet to support the improved delivery of basic care services such as ward housekeeping, hospital food, clean hospitals and linen services.

Network membership comprises NHS staff who have a stake in the delivery of basic care services to patients, in a variety of roles. Typically, network members include estates and facilities staff, nurses, ward managers, matrons, hotel services managers and patient representatives.

Establishing effective partnerships between the clinical and support staff at all levels in the organisation has been key to the success of the networks.

What do the networks do?

The purpose of the networks is to work across health economies to

  • Share learning and good practice regarding basic care services
  • Provide benchmarks
  • Support the modernisation agenda in NHS trusts and SHA
  • Identify local training needs and engage with the workforce development confederations to ensure local needs are met
