  • Last modified date:

Published as a supplement to the Department's Quarterly Briefing, The Healthcare Capital Investment V2.1 ( HCI) document sets out the Department of Health's benchmark costs of model departments in healthcare facilities. They are based on the functional content determined by the Health Building Notes (HBNs).

The HCI includes the review of HBN's for 'consumerism' (originally published as HCI Version 2 2001/2002) uplifting space or rate cost allowances for some elements of some HBNs.  Various sizes of departments, in square metres are given, related to the number of functional units (such as operating theatres) provided.  Essential and complementary accommodation, sometimes shared with other departments, is also scheduled in area and cost terms, together with allowances for built-in equipment.  The % split of costs of engineering and building costs are given.

This publication is downloadable free to the NHS via the DH Estates Knowledge and Information Portal.
