Investment guidance is made available in two different formats - life-cycle of an investment and five-case model. Each item of guidance provided in these formats has an accompanying synopsis, and where it has been superseded by new guidance this is identified. The "specialist areas" index links to other useful sources of information, including that which is relevant to LIFT, IM&T and Estates; and there is an A to Z index of all guidance included in the RouteMap.

There are well defined stages in the life-cycle of an investment beginning with strategic planning and ending with realising the benefits. Users of the RouteMap can access guidance according to the stage that applies. Further guidance specific to LIFT, IM&T and ProCure21 can be accessed through the relevant specialist area.
The five-case model is used for IM&T business cases in the NHS and Department of Health. It is also widely used for non-health-related business cases across central civil government departments.
The OGC Gateway Process examines programmes and projects at critical stages in their life-cycle to provide assurance that they can progress successfully to the next stage
OGC's Successful Delivery Toolkit is a freely available electronic reference tool of best practice and guidance for use by OGC GatewayTM review teams, consultants, programme and project teams in departments, professional advisers, and those responsible for organisational standards.
The RouteMap will be updated as new guidance is made available and, in addition, there may be scope to enhance its functionality in the future. Users' comments are welcomed on any aspect of the use or content of this new tool and should be sent to Peter Cockett in the Capital Investment Branch.
