Deadline for requests to participate 17th September 2007.
The Department of Health wishes to engage the services of a research department with significant experience in the area of stop smoking interventions, to carry out a trial of a proactive, multi-session telephone counselling intervention for smokers (the intervention group.)
The project will be delivered via an existing Department of Health helpline service for smokers (the Together Programme.) The new intervention will be evaluated alongside existing, reactive service provision (the control group).
We anticipate recruiting approximately 2,500 clients over a 6 month period, who would be randomised to one of the two groups. Telephone follow-ups would be conducted with study participants at various time points up to 6 months from recruitment. Subsequent analysis would need to investigate the efffectiveness of both trial conditions and the possible adjunct of free NRT (via mailed vouchers) for the intervention group.
